Why the work matters

Verner Panton came out of the Danish tradition of restrained wood and then spent his career arguing with it. He liked saturated colour, curves that ran in one line, and rooms that felt like a single idea rather than a set of separate objects.

The Panton Chair, first made as one continuous piece of moulded plastic, was the goal he chased for years with Vitra before the material caught up. It still looks like it was drawn tomorrow.
