Why the work matters

Hans Wegner trained as a cabinetmaker before he trained as a designer, and it shows in the joints. He drew more than five hundred chairs and cared most about how a piece felt under the hand and behind the back, not how it photographed.

The Wishbone Chair, with its steam-bent top rail and hand-woven paper cord seat, has been made by Carl Hansen & Søn without a break since 1950. Each one still takes hours of handwork to string.
