Why the work matters

Arne Jacobsen designed buildings first and filled them with objects he had drawn himself, down to the cutlery. His furniture came out of specific rooms: the Egg and the Swan were made for the lobby of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where he wanted seating that gave a person a little privacy in a large open space.

The Series 7 chair, a single sheet of pressure-moulded veneer on slim legs, went the other way and became one of the most produced chairs ever made. Fritz Hansen still builds both.
